Introduction

Perfumes can cover quite a few roles, such as scenting living spaces and cars. But this website will primarily focus on fragrances used to give the human body a more pleasant aroma. We will create a separate site for aftershave for men, this site will concentrate on perfumes designed solely for use by women, or unisex.

A little history

Research has indicated that the first perfumes were made by the first great civilisations like ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq). Even though the Romans refined this technique, after the Roman empire crumbled the use of perfume largely evaporated in Europe. Only after the year 1400, over 100 years later did the industry of perfume making strike up in Europe again.

The industry was largely based in Italy and the South of France. Perfume was expensive and only used by the very wealthy and crown heads of Europe to mask unpleasant body odors. Present day it is still in the South of France where the heart of the European perfume business is based. This area also provides the majority of the raw materials.

How perfume is made, and the ingredients used

All perfumes use a crafting formula, the formula for commercial scents is secret. Though there are experts who could possibly detail the ingredients. The ingredients used depend on the variety of the scent. Some of the most popular varieties are,

  • Floral - popular ingredients are rose, gardenias and jasmine.
  • Amber - labdanum, gum benzoin and myrrh.
  • Wood - sandalwood, rosewood, and cedar.
  • Leather - hay, tomato and tobacco leaf.
  • Green - pine and juniper.
  • Oceanic - synthetics.
  • Fruit - lime, tangerine and mandarin.
  • Oriental - amber, and balsams.
  • Chypre - bergamot, oak moss and patchouli.

There are also sub categories within each, like 'Floral Oriental' and 'Woody Oriental'.

The ingredients used are a variety of plant and animal based compounds. These animal and botanical oils can also be synthetically copied by combining different chemicals. This helps to lower production costs, and can create a cheaper perfume. Finally the ingredients are dissolved in alcohol and water to make a scented liquid. A strong scent will use less alcohol, a weak scent more. A true perfume should have a total of around 30-40% aromatics. Below is a list of the different aromatic compound classification's,

  • Pure perfume - 30-40 % aromatics
  • Eau du parfum - 15-30%
  • Eau du toilette - 5-15%
  • Eau de cologne - 3-5%

The amount of raw materials in a true 'perfume' can number into the hundreds. This is so the scent will last throughout the day. As the day lengthens different notes will come into play, and as one compound dies another will take its place to last twelve hours or more. The reason why copied and fake fragrances may not last as long is that they may scrimp on the number of compounds used. Or they will just not beable to detail all one hundred compounds used in the manufacture of the original. During a twelve hour period a quality perfume should use all it's main compounds, the fragrance altering for the morning, afternoon and evening. Composed of three notes, the first note will last a few minutes, and the base note the majority of the day.

Tips

- Moist skin will make the scent last longer. This is why applying a moisturiser beforehand can help people with dry skin retain the perfume longer.

- Perfume should be stored in an air tight container which is placed in a cool dry location.

- Some scents can cause skin reactions if you're allergic to some of the ingredients. Research is far from complete, but indicates that continued use of perfume can cause more serious health complaints.

- The price of the perfume doesn't always go into the scent. But into the packaging and advertising. It's worth asking an expert perfumer which has the highest concentration of oils.

- You should just spray the scent onto your skin. It's not advised to rub the scent into your skin. This will mix the aroma with your own natural oils and alter the smell of the fragrance.

- Just smelling the cap, or bottle will not help much when picking a fragrance. Only even applied to your skin will you smell the true scent.
